Counting Steps

How many steps do you think one should walk in a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle? 2,000? Maybe 5,000 steps? Well those numbers will just not cut it. It takes an average of 10,000 steps every day to meet the fitness benchmark set for Americans by the former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.  Based off today’s standards, Americans average 4,000 steps a day which accounts for walking to your car on the way to work, grabbing lunch, and back to your car at the end of the day. And if you are feeling the pinch from the economy and have cut out gym expenses, there is still no excuse to get out and get moving. Taking walks with your dogs, children or hike on your own are all great forms of exercise with out having to hit a gym. To help you keep track of your steps is not scientific but by using a pedometer, you can count how many steps you walk in a day, how many calories you burned, heart rate, and more depending on the model. With the rise of obesity in America, it may not be a bad idea to take a few extra steps in your day.
